S/S 2021 COLLECTION: OASIS
Oasis: a fertile or green area in an arid region (such as a desert), secondly, something that provides refuge, relief, or pleasant contrast.
Finding Oasis is finding protection, water in an arid desert where all you can see are sand dunes and the sky, the oasis a welcome sight, somewhere to be nourished, a refuge for imagination and expression coming out of a place where that has been limited. An oasis to come together under the stars to dance, even on moonless nights, to rejoice, after having been confined, stagnant. Another place, where there is an alternative grid, there are makers, exchange and collaboration. Here, we come together to share, to protect each other and to make this oasis our home, our playground, our refuge, a cinema of dreams.
Light and airy, warm, expansive skies, the clothing of Oasis has a familiarity, essentials re-imagined for this new place. With a focus on comfort, simple lines with a keen eye for detail and the signature Philip Huang “slight exaggeration”, the pieces provide protection from the extremes that Mother Earth throws at us in a natural way - biohacking with the power of natural dyes and natural fibres. The clothes are convertible and functional - moving seamlessly from day-to-night. S/S21 introduces a new color, Dune, made from local Sakon Nakhon mud and Moonless, an almost-black made from indigo and ebony berries.
Hand-dyed and artisanal pieces are made in collaboration with the Indigo Grandmas of Sakon Nakhon.
Embroidery and hand-stitching throughout the collection is made in collaboration with the Fatima Self-Help Center in Bangkok by women from disadvantaged families and urban refugees, providing additional sustained income to these communities.
A portion of all sales goes towards pH.Lab, our research and skills-development project whose mission is to preserve the art of indigo dyeing and weaving in Isan through knowledge sharing and skills development for a younger and more diverse group.
